FAQs

How does the briefing/theme work?

On Friday night, we release a list of 15 possible inclusions in the film, a mix of things, places and dialogue. From these, each film need to include 5 of them and at least 2 of the locations. This is to ensure the films are made on the festival weekend.

Does my film have to be in English?

No, your film can be in any language you like, provided there are English subtitles if it is not in English. If the theme requires dialogue, it doesn’t have to be spoken in English.

What is the maximum team size?

There is no maximum team size but we can only guarantee 6 seats for each team at the screening and awards gala at the Ritz Cinema on Sunday evening. All teams are charged $35.

Do actors need to be registered? Do they count towards team size?

We recommend registering all team members and remember, you can also borrow an actor from us over the weekend if you need one for any key cut-away shots (“Mr President, the missiles have been launched!”)

Is there an age restriction to take part in the challenge?

No, but to qualify for a family entry there must be at least 2 adults registering with the team.

Can I show explicit content in my film?

We’d rather you didn’t – if it’s too raunchy it will be disqualified. What’s acceptable on Coogee Beach on a hot sunny day is the line we draw. We’re not prudes but this festival is about ideas, creativity and fun, not sexy flesh and nudity. Nothing wrong with that, just do the steamy stuff for another festival.

What is the maximum amount of time that my film can run for?

The maximum time your film can go for is 5 minutes. This includes titles/credits. There is no minimum run-time. Remember short and sharp beats long and flabby.

What happens if my film runs over maximum run-time?

Then you haven’t finished the edit!
